DISASTER RELIEF CHAIN SAW TEAM
Trained for Service
In 2007 our Hispanic fellowship of brothers and sisters of CBBA (known as the Coastal Bend Companerismo) contributed $1500 toward equipment to start a chain saw team. With added funds CBBA/CBA now has three 18" Stihl chain saws and safety equipment for six men with a 6x11 tandem axle v-nose trailer. It is a great start and a new opportunity for our association to work together and serve others in their time of need as well as be prepared to help our own area if a disaster strikes here.
Our CBBA team can now work with other trained teams to clear roadways and drive ways, get trees off of houses and out of yards. We are considered a ground level operating team until we receive further training. We will work under the direction of other Chain Saw leadership until we are able to produce an approved "blue cap" leader.
Eight yellow caps trained and 11 people completed specialty training. Dee Poe of San Antonio led eight through specialty training for the Chain Saw Team and Carolyn Southerland trained 3 in specialty training for the Child Care Unit. We are in the process of registering the Chain Saw unit with the Texas Baptist Men's Disaster Relief.
Last year 10 yellow caps were trained at Central Baptist in Kingsville. Yellow caps that do not have specialty training can receive it prior to an event but can also be trained at the disaster by a qualified trainer.
Trained to Serve on the Chain Saw Team are Valentin Sepulveda, Mario Henson, Lupe Martinez, Sonny Garza, Jesse Garcia, Sr. and Jesse Garcia, Jr, Arnold Billups, and Mike O'Neill.
Trained to Serve with the Child Care Unit are Janie Garcia, Nena Martinez, and Lisa Henson.
